( ABC 6 News) -- This week the Soaring Society of American Region 7 glider flight competition will take place at the Albert Lea airport, "This is the Regents 7 Glider contest. There are seven of them in the United States. So this regional contest will take people into the nationals. The top three finishing here will go in the nationals." that's according to Jim Hanson, manager of the Albert Lea airport.
More than 20 teams some from as far as Argentina and France are coming to compete.
One competitor told ABC 6 News, "I'm the only one in there. When you are in a single plane glider you feel like you are one with the airplane more than anything. It responds quickly…It's the best way to fly" said Jim Henry.
During the event, pilots like Jim will take to the sky and put their gliding skills to the test in their engine-free planes, supported only by air they will be evaluated by the accuracy of their flights.
Each glider has a GPS installed to evaluate very rise, fall, and twist and turn. A number of points each pilot receives will be based on how accurate they execute their task flight. Whoever earns the most points will qualify to move on the U.S. Glider Championships.
